National law enforcement research shows that a single mounted officer is as effective as ten to fifteen officers on foot. In fact, mounted patrols are so effective that they are being used and expanded by our nation's cities, rural departments, boarder patrols and private businesses.

Search:

Mounted Unit members operate more efficiently during search missions because they make less noise and have a greater range of visibility. Less noise means they can hear sounds such as a small child in distress. A mounted officer sits two to three feet taller than most officers on foot, more than three feet taller than a motorcycle or ATV rider and four feet taller than an officer in a patrol car. A Mounted Police Deputy can see and be seen at much greater distances and can navigate though tougher terrain at much faster speeds.

Crowd Control:

Mounted police officers are more visible to the public, offering excellent opportunities for improved public relations. People respect the horses at work and will relocate to give the officers the ability to penetrate a crowd to solve conflicts or problems. Participants in a crowd guarded by mounted officers are less likely to commit crime because it is more difficult to hide the crime. This is a very serious deterrent to thieves and predators. It has been said the crowd feels as if the officers are everywhere. Members of the crowd often comment on the feelings of security they have with the mounted unit present.
