For Immediate Release                                                                                  January 2, 2014

                                                   Women charged with Child Abuse

Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

Sheriff Jimmy Harris reports that in early August 2013 DHR contacted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a suspected child abuse case in Crossville. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s investigator Craig White began the investigation process by conducting interviews. The victim was 8 months old at the time of the injury. The victim’s mom Sabrina Sprayberry called 911 and reported the victim had fallen and he needed medical attention. Sprayberry transported her child by private vehicle to Marshall Medical. Upon arrival and observation by Medical staff the victim was flown to Children’s hospital in Birmingham where surgery was conducted. The investigation discovered the mechanism of injury did not match the nature of injury. The case was presented to the grand jury. Sabrina Sprayberry, 20 of Crossville, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Child Abuse. She was released on 25,000 bond. The child is in the custody and care of DHR. He is in a safe environment.

Sheriff Harris states “A lot of hard work went into this case thanks to DHR, investigators, and the hospital. It is always sad when a child is injured especially a child of this age.”
