DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Offering a New Class on Gun Safety

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release                                                       February 14, 2014

DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Offering a New Class on Gun Safety

Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

Sheriff Jimmy Harris is offering a new class for the public beginning February 24th. This class is called BASIC HANDGUN SHOOTER SAFETY and is designed to make new or inexperienced shooters have a better, safer shooting experience. The class will cover several areas including firearm safety, basic weapon operation, types of shooting, fundamentals of shooting, target analysis, shooting drills, and current handgun laws in Alabama. This course will last approximately 4 hours and can be followed up with a trip to the firing range for an additional 2 hours of practical training.

Participants must be over 18 years of age and be able to legally possess a handgun. All class members will be pre-registered and must pass a back-ground check similar to those for a pistol permit application. Class size will be limited to insure better communication of the material due to the serious nature of the subject. Classes will be held at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office at 2801 Jordan Road and will run from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. Range time will be scheduled on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Anyone interested in these classes should call 256-304-0469 and speak with Shannon about an application. Applications can also be picked up at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office from 8-4 each week day.

Harris states “We are glad to offer this class to the public after such a tremendous interest in our Gun Law classes last year. This class will teach people all the basics they need to handle and shoot handguns safely. Our main goal is to better educate people on proper firearm use and carry if they choose to get a handgun. We support the right to have and carry handguns but we just want people to do it legally, properly, and safely.”
