Operation DeKalb County Save a Child

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release                                                                               April 4, 2014

Operation DeKalb County Save a Child

Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office initiated a mulit-agency operation headquartered at the Sheriff’s Office with a goal of verifying the compliance of all registered adult sex offenders in DeKalb County. The Sheriff determined there was a need to verify the information that the adult offenders provide to the Sheriff on their quarterly registrations. Because of the number of offenders that live in the County, the Sheriff enlisted the aid of other law enforcement to assist in the accomplishment this goal.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Payne Police Department, Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole (State Probation), Alabama Bureau of Investigations (ABI), U.S. Marshals, and all other Police Departments organized a sex offender compliance operation that was designed to verify compliance of all sex offenders that reside in DeKalb County. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations reports that 171 Adults sex offenders reside in the County. The operation ran from April 1st to April 3rd, with teams of investigators from the agencies listed going out into the County and making contact with all the registered offenders. The operational results showed that 164 were verified (148 compliant and 16 were non-compliant). The compliance rate for DeKalb County is considered above average. Additionally DeKalb County had five sex offenders with felony warrants that are currently under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office will be seeking the issuance of five new felony warrants for violations of sex offender registration laws as a result of this operation.

Sheriff Harris wanted to emphasize to the community the importance his office places on the safety of our children and to ensure that the community is aware that his Office takes this responsibility very seriously and that sex offender compliance is just one example of the great work that the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office go out and do every day for the citizens of DeKalb County.  This operation could not have been accomplished without the assistance of all these agencies working together, pooling resources and efforts. In addition to this operation being successful, hopefully it will lay the ground work for future partnerships.
