DeKalb County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit Goes to Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL
Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:
The DeKalb County Sheriff mounted unit assisted Mobile County Sheriff’s Office with the Mardi Gras parades this week. The duties of the Mounted Unit was to keep people behind the barriers, provide security for the floats and the marshals of the parade. They also patrol the streets and parking lots along the parade route in downtown Mobile. Their main objective was to deter crime. They respond to physical disturbances and assist foot officers with several arrest. Sheriff Harris says “For several years we have assisted with Mardi Gras in Mobile. Sheriff’s Offices all over the state have a mutual aid agreement to assist each other as they are needed for various reasons like in 2011 after the tornados hit DeKalb County Mobile County sent about 40 officers from the city and county to help out. I am thankful that we can call on each other and have the extra help when we need it.”
