For Immediate Release                                             August 26, 2016

 Man Arrested for making Explosives

Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

On August 24th the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a man stating that his wife was threating to harm herself. When deputies arrived at the residence on County Road 803 in Ider they made contact with the wife and seen that she was ok. She then told the deputies that her husband was manufacturing explosives inside the residence. Deputies got consent to search the residence and contacted the State Fire Marshal, ATF, Ider Police Department and EOD unit from Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. As a result of the search deputies found a large amount of chemicals, finished explosives and found 5 or 6 devises that had been set off in yard. All explosives and chemicals were removed from the residence and made safe. Russell Neal Godwin, 43 of Ider was arrested and charged with 3 counts Criminal Possession of Explosives. Godwin was transported to the DeKalb County Detention Center where he remains with a $45,000 bond. This case remains open with additional charges pending.

Sheriff Harris says “We are fortunate that no one was injured during this search and seizure of this explosive material. We also want to thank Ider Police, Deputy Fire Marshal Ray Cumby, ATF and EOD for their assistance.”
