Traffic Stop Leads to 3 Arrests

Sheriff Jimmy Harris states as follows:

On Friday September 1, Deputy Dustin Jones, conducted a traffic stop on County Road 169 in the Higdon area, stopping a Ford Focus occupied by 3 adults and a minor child. As Deputy Jones approached the vehicle, he noticed that the driver appeared to be sticking something in his mouth. Deputy Jones asked the driver, Cody Durham, 28 of Trenton Ga , to step out of the vehicle. Upon doing a search, a marijuana grinder was found in Durham’s pockets. Durham was placed under arrest and placed into custody.

After Durham was placed into the backseat of Deputy Jones’ vehicle, the front passenger in Durham’s car, Jared Haggard, 26 of Higdon, jumped into the drivers seat of the vehicle and took off with an adult female and minor child in the backseat.    At that time, a Drug Task Force Agent and another Deputy took over the pursuit which led to County Road 1948 that ended with the Focus wrecking into a tree. Haggard, along with, Whitney Durham, 24 of Higdon, took off on foot into the woods, taking the minor child with them. The family found Whitney Durham and the child in a wooded area just of County Road 817 and led authorities to them. Haggard, was seen in a small dark colored vehicle a short time later. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle which fled into a field off County Road 817 before wrecking. Haggard ran on foot and was later found hiding in an attic of a residence on County Road 817.

Cody Durham was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Resisting Arrest, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Jared Haggard was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Endangering Welfare of Child, and Resisting Arrest. Whitney Durham was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Endangering Welfare of Child, and Resisting Arrest.   All three are currently in the DeKalb County jail awaiting bond.

Department of Human Resources was contacted and a relative from Trenton Ga took the minor child into their care.

Chief Michael Edmondson would like to thank Dade County Sheriff’s Office, Ider Police Department, Sheriff Chuck Phillips and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in helping the DeKalb County Drug Task Force and deputies in making these arrests.
